The War Memorial on Eigg what a huge sacrifice by a tiny population?

On our wonderful visit to Eigg last weekend at the Singing Sands at Cleadale we stopped at the War Memorial, what a situation it is in. It is dedicated to those on this small Island who gave their lives for others.

The views of the sea and Rhum are incredible and the great bulk of Beinn Buidhe make this a hugely poignant place to be. If you visit the Island have a look at this tribute.

Great views of Rhum

Eigg has only a small population but the number who gave their lives for us in this small Island is incredible. I noticed that there were a few girls there were 5 in the ATS ( is this the Auxiliary Territorial Service or Air Transport Service?)that gave the final sacrifice?  Does anyone have the story?

  • Our War Memorial is made of local stone.
    • Our War Memorial has a bronze plaque with names on it and a dedication both in English and Gaelic, but no carved pictures or symbols.
  • The memorial includes the names of everyone who fought in World War 1 and World War 2, not just the names of those who died in the wars.
  • It tells you what regiment they were in and whether they were killed in action.
  • There are 11 names for World War 1 and 29 names for World War 2.
  • They are all Eigg people, apart from Dr MacLean who came to Eigg after World War 2 and was the island doctor for nearly 40 years.
  • A great tribute by those who gave so much.

Another story from this magical Island.
