Looking back 1984 was a pretty good winter, there was plenty of snow and ice about and the hills were  very busy. In these days we had a lot of call – outs, even more climbing and I was enjoying the winter. It had all started so well I had got some time off and the snow and ice conditions were really good.  I had recently been to Canada climbing some amazing ice and even I had some confidence. One of the young ice stars wanted to go to Hells Lum Crag, in the Cairngorms he was working nights so we would go in early Friday morning and get in before the crowds!  It is a fare walk in with a big bag but we knew the area well and had done some great routes in the past and I did enjoy the…
